Aspartame
has now officially been linked to both weight gain and diabetes.
Aspartame, (half of which - aspartic acid - targets the same receptors
as glutamate, and can actually convert into glutamate in the body) has been
shown to increase blood sugar in experiments. Studies in humans showed
that those who drank diet sodas with aspartame as opposed to those who
avoided diet sodas had 500% larger waistlines. It appears that diet
sodas are aptly named - after you drink them you WILL need to be on a diet.

MSG and aspartame according to researchers have a synergistic effect. Why does
this matter? Aspartame is a questionable food additive in its own right. Not
to mention, that the body can and does actually change aspartate into glutamate by a
simple chemical reaction. This is probably why researchers paid by the food industry
used aspartame in one of their studies in the placebo.
For the most comprehensive look at aspartame, the book Aspartame Disease, An
Ignored Epidemic by Dr. H.J. Roberts, MD, FACP, FCCP
is a
thorough look at aspartame through the eyes of a physician. This doctor lists the
symptoms of aspartame disease which include arrhythmias, fibromyalgia, simulation of
multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease, loss of control of diabetes, hypoglycemia,
headache, blurred vision, rashes, chest pain, depression, anxiety attacks, severe fatigue,
addiction, infertility, dizziness, seizures, confusion.
These symptoms should sound familiar to MSG Symptom Complex sufferers - they are common
to both disorders.
Unfortunately for those already addicted to aspartame, not only is aspartate present in
aspartame, but phenylalinine and the breakdown products of formaldehyde and methanol.
Formaldehyde is something any funeral home director would recognize - it is used
for embalming corpses. Formaldehyde has now
officially been designated a carcinogen in the US.
Tests have shown that pituitary tumors develop in rats fed aspartame (Nutrasweet) .
Unfortunately, benign tumors like these in the American public, although they can
have a devastating affect on the victim are not included in registries. Only
malignant (cancerous) tumors are included in registries. We have a great record of
testing things for carcinogenicity, but a very poor track record of testing things for
their endocrine-disrupting ability. Perhaps Monsanto would not have been granted
license to use aspartame, if benign pituitary tumors were actually being tracked.
One of the contributors to this website, a scientist who worked heavily with aspartame
and ingested MSG in other test products at the same time, has
been diagnosed with a clinically significant
pituitary tumor and weight gain associated with the tumor. Coincidence? Until we start tracking benign tumors, no one
will know for sure. For more information on pituitary tumors and their effects see the
